Welcome to our series of mini-interviews with our published Mannison Minibook authors! We’ve enjoyed working with them so much that we wanted to get to know them a bit better. Today, we are interviewing…

Cecily Winter
Author of Mannison Minibook
The Many Ways of Heartbreak
Thanks for joining us, Cecily! Let’s learn a little about YOU! So tell us…
1. How old were you when you decided you were a writer?
At first, I was shy about publishing stories but in a late bid to finished my BA, I joined the staff of the college literary magazine and finally did risk placing poetry and short stories–by then around 30 years old.
2. What was the inspiration for The Many Ways of Heartbreak?
The inspiration for The Many Ways of Heartbreak was international news about recent political assassinations, by heartbreak grass in particular.
3. Were any of the characters in the story – Jessamine, Miss Deng – based on real people or experiences?
No one in the story was based on a real person, although I did join the names of one Chinese person and one Taiwanese person I know for Miss Deng’s name: Jessamine, of course, is named for the common form of the poison.
4. Did you have any specific music in mind as you wrote this story?
Music is not my muse. Tinkling doorbells, yes.
5. What’s your favorite genre to write in?
I have no favorite genre but I love to work with speculative elements and science.
6. Got anything new cookin’?
I have three novels anxious to be querying publishers and agents; numerous short stories half finished; and one story about a “lost boy” that might have suited your new anthology. Oh well.
7. And just for fun… Do you snack while you write?
I try not to, but it’s always junk when I do—chocolate (now in remission), chips, tortilla chips, salted nuts, or crackers.
Thank you so much for taking the time to indulge us, Cecily! We hope you enjoyed sharing a bit about yourself and your work with our audience.
